Bumble Bee Breath
Bzzz - It's spring and that means that all sorts of things are happening. There's lots of pollen in the air. Your sinuses may feel stuffy or even blocked. There's some stress too. Maybe you are working in the garden or getting ready for some big spring or summer event. In Sevier County, TN the tourist season is beginning to pick up. Some people are going back to work. Traffic is definitely intensifying. The joy of springtime can lead to some physical and mental irritations. Breathing can help!
Scientific research shows that vibrations that we make with our own bodies are very helpful. Vibrations can open up closed areas making tissue and fluids move around thus preventing or clearing up blockages. Again this can be both physical (sinus trouble) and mental (seasonal stress). The Bramahri or Bumble Bee Breath is a gentle calming breath that uses vibration along with exhalation and actually extends exhalation. You can easily increase your exhalation for several seconds. This aids in relaxation. It may move you into the alpha brain wave state of mind that is described as wakeful relaxation. This helps with meditation. Buzzing vibrates the entire head including the sinuses. This helps in clearing them and may prevent infections. Using this type of breathing makes you aware of your breath and breathing pattern. It keeps you in the here and now allowing you to release unpleasant thoughts and relax tight muscles.
It's easy to do. Close your mouth bring your teeth together and hum. You can make an "m" sound or a "ng" sound. You can put the tip tongue on the roof of your mouth. You can also move your jaw up and down as you hum with your lips closed. Try using the Bramahri Breath while you are practicing an asana, especially one that you would like to extend your exhalation.
